Alex Carlson is running to represent the Livingston District on the Spotsylvania County Public Schools (SCPS) School Board. He is a Husband, Father, and Veteran with a passion for community service and making things better through a deliberate approach to each and every issue. His mission is to bring decorum and prestige back to SCPS, improve all schools, and make the students the top priority. With over a quarter century of military service, Alex knows what it takes to find solutions, navigate complicated situations, and get things done for the community.
LIST OF ISSUES
EDUCATION: Alex believes that education is the foundation of a strong and prosperous community. He will work to improve the quality of education, make it more accessible for everyone, and listen to feedback from students, parents, guardians, and teachers.
BUDGET: Alex believes that in order to support the needs of the students and the facilities they learn and play in that there must be a balanced budget. He will attend every meeting prepared with solutions to problems after having done his research and/or received analysis on prioritized needs.
RECRUITING & RETAINING TEACHERS: Alex believes that our teachers are doing a great job but need to be supported on every level from personal & professional development to wellness to ensuring their classrooms are positive learning spaces. As a SCPS substitute teacher, Alex has witnessed the shortages first hand and will work to make SCPS a top destination for new teachers while retaining experienced teachers and encouraging paraeducators and substitutes to ascend to full-time teaching positions.
SCHOOL SAFETY: Alex is committed to protecting students, teachers, and school support staff. School Resource Officers (SROs) are good at identifying and preventing internal and external threats but the best source of information and deterrence will be from within the student population. All students must feel safe from bullying, violence, and unauthorized/illegal substances. He will work to ensure that policies or devices are in places to allow students to be part of the solutions while emplacing necessary deterrents in place to safeguard all.
COMMUNITY: Alex celebrates diversity and believes that it is a strength of the community. He will work to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone, regardless of their race, religion, or background. He will encourage more community events and opportunities for students and their families to connect and interact. Connection builds trust and trust will bring positive change for our students so they have every opportunity to be successful while in the SCPS system and beyond.
